Student cube becomes Atelier House<\/h2>\n

Since 2016, twelve students have been able to live, study and research in a completely redesigned building in the heart of Niederrad. The transportable \u201cCUBITY\u201d made of wood and glass has now been awarded a prize in the \u201cExemplary Buildings in the State of Hesse\u201d competition. The official award ceremony for \u201cExemplary Buildings in the State of Hesse\u201d took place in Frankfurt-Niederrad on Monday, 21.02.2022.<\/p>\n

The CUBITY on the road<\/h2>\n

The CUBITY-LivingLAB is now becoming a pioneering place for knowledge transformation in the municipality of Merzenich in North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n

In the future, people from all over the world will temporarily research and live in CUBITY, focusing on architecture, urban planning, nature and landscape development in the context of structural change in the Rhenish mining area at the Hambach open-cast mine.<\/p>\n

The Britta and Ulrich Findeisen Foundation for Art and Architecture, based in Cologne, has acquired the building. Over the next few weeks, CUBITY will be dismantled and moved from Frankfurt to Poolplatz in the municipality of Merzenich in the district of Dueren. There it will be rebuilt as a CUBITY Atelier House with a new utilization concept as a pioneering location for education, teaching and research.<\/p>\n

An outstanding property with a future<\/h2>\n

Before the modular building is relocated, the architects, builders and project partners receive the prestigious award in the field of sustainable planning and construction in the New Construction award category, Exemplary Buildings in the State of Hesse 2020, from the State of Hesse and the Hesse Chamber of Architects and Urban Planners (AKH).<\/p>\n

The award procedure \u201cExemplary Buildings in the State of Hesse – Prize for Architecture and Urban Development\u201d is jointly awarded every three years by the State of Hesse, represented by the Hessian Ministry of Finance, and the Chamber of Architects and Town Planners of Hesse. The award has been presented since 1954 and is one of the oldest recognized architecture prizes in Germany. This year, the \u201cExemplary Buildings\u201d will be awarded for the first time for architecture and urban planning, as the transformation of cities can only succeed if all disciplines work together.
\nAssessment of the jury<\/p>\n

With a comprehensive, holistic understanding of sustainability, the CUBITY project impresses with an innovative approach to the current topic of new forms of living. The sustainable life cycle of CUBITY is particularly evident in the form of the remarkable, resource-conserving construction method, which underlines the fundamental approach of sufficiency. In particular, the targeted examination of spatial and thermal self-limitation surpasses the otherwise predominantly applied sustainability in the choice of materials, to which many construction projects are limited.<\/p>\n

The consideration of private spaces and the climatic-innovative considerations are particularly successful in their implementation. The focus on social, communal spaces and the correspondingly small private spaces are proof of a sustainable, solidary form of living. Shared space is emphasized, which has a resource-saving effect on the entire residential community and makes CUBITY an exemplary project.<\/p>\n

CUBITY has managed to position itself as a pioneer in the establishment of new forms of living in urban areas through sufficiency and energy efficiency. As a student residence, the project demonstrates its relevance to everyday life and proves itself in its functionality and flexibility.<\/p>\n

The jury recognized the project as an effective, innovative and sustainable contribution to the current debate on sustainable housing alternatives.

A futuristic building as an inspiration for future projects<\/h2>\n

The Britta and Ulrich Findeisen Foundation for Art and Architecture (Cologne) has purchased the cube-shaped lightweight building with an internal area of 16 by 16 meters and twelve stacked residential cubes with a total of 80 bases. In spring, it will be dismantled and moved to the Poolplatz in the municipality of Merzenich in the district of Dueren. There it will serve as a studio building with a new utilization concept as a pioneering location for education, teaching and research.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, only women applied,\u201d recalled the architect, Professor Anett-Maud Joppien (TU Darmstadt), at the award ceremony on Monday. \u201cLater, men also took courage.\u201d The \u201cCUBITY\u201d was special right from the start. In 2013, Joppien and 50 students created the world’s first \u201cplus-energy student residence\u201d in nine months, exhibited it in Versailles near Paris and won the International Solar Prize for it.<\/p>\n

As a \u201cLivingLab\u201d (freely translated as \u201cLiving Laboratory\u201d) with the maxim \u201caffordable living, plenty of space for community and maximum energy efficiency,\u201d the building came to Adolf-Miersch-Strasse in Niederrad in 2015. Since 2016, twelve students have lived in it on a property owned by Nassauischen Heimst\u00e4tte. From the very beginning, \u201cCUBITY\u201d was supported by the state of Hesse. Deutsche Fertighaus Holding AG was involved in the construction. As part of a three-year research project, energy and social science monitoring was carried out.

\u201cThis will move the whole region,\u201d said Lothar Klein, representative of the mayor of Merzenich, at the award ceremony. \u201cCUBITY is beautiful, exciting and inspiring. Claudia Rathgeber from the Hessian Ministry of Finance and Florian Dreher as project manager of the \u201cExemplary Buildings in the State of Hesse\u201d award procedure honored Joppien with the prize for architecture and urban development. The specifications had been implemented by her in an unprecedented manner and the three-year energy and social science monitoring also provided plenty of \u201copportunities for the life of tomorrow\u201d

Die Stiftung f\u00fcr Kunst und Baukultur Britta und Ulrich Findeisen schafft einen zukunftsweisenden Ort f\u00fcr Forschung, Lehre und Bildung<\/h2>\r\n\r\nDie Stiftung f\u00fcr Kunst und Baukultur Britta und Ulrich Findeisen hat das im Jahr 2014 von der TU Darmstadt f\u00fcr den Solar Declathon Europe in Versailles entwickelte CUBITY von der Deutschen Fertighaus Holding (DFH Gruppe) erworben. Das derzeit als CUBITY-LivingLAB von der Nassauischen Heimst\u00e4tte Wohnstadt in Frankfurt am Main genutzte Geb\u00e4ude soll ab dem Fr\u00fchjahr 2022 in der Gemeinde Merzenich seinen neuen Standort am Poolplatz erhalten und als CUBITY-Atelierhaus eine neue Bestimmung erhalten. Im CUBITY-Atelierhaus sollen Menschen aus aller Welt rund um die Thematik Architektur, St\u00e4dtebau, Natur und Landschaftsentwicklung im Rahmen des Strukturwandels am Hambacher Tagebau tempor\u00e4r forschen und wohnen.\r\n\r\nAm Donnerstag, den 23.12.2021 um 14 Uhr erfolgt die offizielle \u00dcbergange des Bauantrages am neuen Standort.\r\n\r\n

Entwicklungsm\u00f6glichkeiten und Zukunftsprojekte Gro\u00dfe Ideen und strukturwirksame Projekte realisieren<\/h2>\r\n\r\nMerzenich ist zwar eine kleine Kommune im Herzen des Rheinischen Braunkohlereviers in Nordrhein-Westfalen im Kreis D\u00fcren, aber muss sich nicht verstecken. Insgesamt leben und arbeiten rund 9.600 Menschen mit ihren vielseitigen Lebensgeschichten und Hintergr\u00fcnden in der Gemeinde, davon in den Ortsteilen Merzenich 6.900 Einwohner auf 15,93 km\u00b2, Girbelsrath 1.200 Einwohner auf 4,62 km\u00b2 und Golzheim 1.381 Einwohner auf 11,31 km\u00b2. \u201eKeiner wei\u00df so viel wir wie alle zusammen\u201c lautet eine Inschrift auf einer d\u00e4nischen Rathaust\u00fcr. Dieses kollektive Wissen erm\u00f6glicht Entwicklung und Fortschritt.\r\n\r\nIm CUBITY-Atelierhaus der Stiftung Findeisen sollen Menschen aus aller Welt rund um die Thematik Architektur, St\u00e4dtebau, Natur und Landschaftsentwicklung im Rahmen des Strukturwandels am Hambacher Tagebau tempor\u00e4r forschen und wohnen. Unter anderem k\u00f6nnen hier die Thematiken Tagebau Hambach, Hambacher Forst und die Umgestaltung von Alt-Morschenich zum \u201eOrt der Zukunft\u201c genauer untersucht werden. In diesem Zusammenhang k\u00f6nnen die Ergebnisse in Form von Ausstellungen und Vortr\u00e4gen pr\u00e4sentiert werden. Auch anderweitige Lehrveranstaltungen f\u00fcr Kindergarten- und Grundschulkinder sollen im Gesamtkonzept m\u00f6glich sein.\r\n\r\nDas CUBITY-Atelierhaus soll zudem auch f\u00fcr verschiedene Veranstaltungen der Gemeinde Merzenich und RWE genutzt werden. Hier sind Tagungen und Lesungen angedacht. Bei Veranstaltungen, wie z.B. Ausstellungen, Lesungen, Vortr\u00e4gen o. \u00e4., mit erh\u00f6htem Besucheraufkommen wird lediglich die Erdgeschossebene genutzt. Das Obergeschoss bleibt weiterhin privater R\u00fcckzugsort f\u00fcr die tempor\u00e4reren Bewohner.\r\n\r\nEs ist eine maximale Bestuhlung von 40 Sitzpl\u00e4tzen anzunehmen. Selbst bei Ausstellungen bei denen haupts\u00e4chlich gestanden wird, sind mit nicht mehr als 80 Personen im Geb\u00e4ude zu rechnen. Demnach ist das CUBITY keine Versammlungsst\u00e4tte. Die Nutzung des tempor\u00e4ren Forschens und Wohnens ist aufgrund der 12 vorhandenen Wohnzellen auf 12 Personen beschr\u00e4nkt. Diese Zellen bestehen aus jeweils einem Schlaf- und Arbeitsplatz mit dazugeh\u00f6rigem Sanit\u00e4rbereich. Die restlichen Fl\u00e4chen wie die K\u00fcche, die Lounge und der Marktplatz werden gemeinschaftlich genutzt. Die Nutzung des Geb\u00e4udes erstreckt sich \u00fcber das gesamte Jahr und soll sowohl an Werktagen als auch an Sonntagen und Feiertagen bespielt werden.
