With the early coal phase-out in 2030, RWE Power AG, the federal government and the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia have agreed to preserve six former lignite villages in the Rhenish mining area. Morschenich-Alt is the first village to be revived. The village of Morschenich-Alt will once again become a lively part of the municipality of Merzenich. With funding from the federal government and the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the village is set to become the first “place of the future” in the Rhenish district. This is a milestone for structural change in the Rhenish district.
